The role of flux in solid welding wire

In solid welding wire, the effect of flux is similar to that of cloth-covered welding rods. The manufacturers of solid welding wires have their own unique formulas for the composition of the flux, and they vary according to the functions suitable for the welding materials used. The selected flux compositions are also different. Next, the editor will talk to you about what role the welding wire plays in solid flux?

Flux in solid welding wire acts as a nitrogen removal and oxygen scavenger. Due to the presence of oxygen and nitrogen, it is very easy to cause embrittlement and pores in the metal in the solid welding wire. The flux in solid welding wire requires the addition of silicon, manganese and other deodorizers. Oxygen, this is to protect the metal welding wire. Some additional materials are added to it as a nitrogen removal agent, and the purpose of the above ingredients is to protect the melting point of the metal flux and also serve as a slag forming agent.

Silicon, sodium, potassium, calcium and other substances can be used as welding slag forming agents. Adding them to the solid welding wire can protect the molten pool from being easily polluted. It can also make the appearance of the welding props better. It is bright, can cool quickly, and can better support the welding wire during the welding process. The areas covered by welding slag can slow down the cooling rate of the metal. This function is particularly important for the welding process of some low-alloy steels.

Solid wire flux can also be used as an arc stabilizer. With these two elements, it can keep the arc smooth and soft and reduce the possibility of spatter. Some alloy metals, including manganese, can be added to it. The addition of alloy metals such as nickel and chromium can well improve the salinity, strength, toughness, etc. of melting point metals. At the same time, there are also gas forming agents in the welding wire. For example, limestone is added to the solid welding wire that can protect itself. Corresponding protective gas can be produced during the combustion process to avoid the tendency of combustion to change.

The composition of the solid welding wire determines the welding workability of the welding material and the mechanical properties of the filler metal. If the flux composition is mainly acidic, acidic welding slag will be generated after welding. Similarly, if the flux composition is mainly acidic, alkaline welding will be produced. Scum. The welding properties of acidic system welding materials are very good. During the welding process, the arc is smooth and stable, the shape is similar to a jet arc, and the amount of spatter is small. It is favored by many welders in work. The filler metal has ordinary mechanical properties but can meet the requirements of AWS specifications.

If the flux is an alkaline system welding material, the filler metal can obtain very good ductility and toughness, but the workability is far worse than that of the acidic system. The transition of molten droplets is mostly ball-drop transition, with more splashing. The flux system for low-alloy steel welding consumables was developed to combine the workability of the acidic system with the mechanical properties of the alkaline system.
