How Cobalt-Based Welding Rods Are Made?

Cobalt-based welding rod is a metal strip that is melted at high temperature during arc welding and filled in the joint of the welded workpiece. Usually, the corresponding welding rod is selected according to the material of the welding workpiece. Cobalt-based welding rods can be used for welding the same type of steel or welding between different steels.

The structure of cobalt-based welding rod:

Cobalt-based coated electrodes for cobalt-based electrodes consist of an inner metal core and an outer coating. The core is in the shape of a steel wire of certain diameter and length. The main function of the iron core is to conduct current to heat and melt it, and then fill the connected workpieces to melt them together to form a weld.

The material of the welding core of cobalt-based welding rods can generally be divided into carbon steel, alloy steel and stainless steel. However, in order to meet the welding requirements, there are special requirements for the materials and metal elements of the welding core, and there are strict regulations on the content of some metal elements, because the metal composition of the welding core will directly affect the quality of the weld.

There will be a layer of coating on the outside of the cobalt-based welding rod, called the coating, which plays an important role in welding the traditional Chinese medicine coating. If the workpiece and the welding core are directly welded, air and other substances will enter the molten metal of the welding core, and chemical reactions will also occur in the molten metal, directly causing quality problems such as weld pores and cracks, and directly affecting the welding strength. However, the coating of special elements will decompose and melt into gas and slag at high temperatures, which can be effectively prevented.

The ingredients of cobalt-based welding rod coating include: silicon hydrochloric acid, fluoride, carbonate, oxide, organic matter, ferrous alloy and other chemical powders. Mixed according to a certain formula ratio, different types of coated electrode skins have different ingredients.

There are generally two types of coatings on the surface of the welding core of cobalt-based electrodes: thickness, and the main components of the coating are basically the same.

There are three common cobalt-based welding rods, namely slag-forming agent, gas generator and deoxidizer.

Flux is a compound that protects the molten metal from air when the electrode melts, thereby improving the quality of the weld. The gas generator is mainly composed of starch, wood powder and other substances, and has certain reducing properties. The deoxidizer is composed of ferrotitanium and ferromanganese, which can improve the wear resistance and corrosion resistance of metals. In addition, there are other types of coatings on the surface of the covered electrode, and the composition and proportion of each type will be different.
